Mataram (Atnews) - Australia's Consul-General Bali, NTB and NTT, Ms Jo Stevens, attended the launch of a book entitled ‘Two Islands, One Thread: Lombok and Bali Textiles from the Michael Abbott Collections’ at the West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) State Museum in Mataram, Lombok, Kamis (29/10/2026).
The book explores Lombok and Bali textile traditions. Vice Governor of NTB, Ibu Hj. Indah Dhamayanti Putri, Speaker of the NTB Regional House of Representatives, Hj. Baiq Isvie Rupaeda and Chair of Dekranasda NTB, Ibu Santi Agatha Soedjoko also attended.
Speaking at the launch of the book, Ms Stevens spoke of her own love of local textiles, saying " I've been very privileged to serve as Australia's Consul-General for both Bali and Lombok for three years now, and over that time, I've fallen in love with these incredible textiles myself. I know that so many Australian visitors to these islands have also had the same experience."
Ms Stevens also congratulated Australian and Indonesian researchers who contributed to the book, saying "This is what cultural exchange between neighbours should look like. It should move us from simply admiring art, to better understanding it and the people who create it.
This book creates opportunities for Australians, and people around the world to greater appreciate the beautiful textile traditions of Lombok and Bali."
‘Two Islands, One Thread: Lombok and Bali Textiles from the Michael Abbott Collections’ was developed through a collaboration between the Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA) and the West Nusa Tenggara State Museum and was first launched in Adelaide, Australia on 12 September 2026.
It is the first major international study of Lombok textiles, and was made possible by the generosity of Michael Abbott AO KC, a renowned Australian collector of Southeast Asian art.
