Badung (Atnews) - Hatten Wines, Bali’s pioneering winery, announces the launch of Avara, a premium wine collection shaped by more than three decades of winemaking experience, vineyard research and exploration of Bali’s tropical terroir.

Founded in Bali in 1994 by Ida Bagus Rai Budarsa, Hatten Wines began with a simple yet ambitious question: Why shouldn’t Bali have its own wine? At a time when tropical climates were widely considered unsuitable for quality winemaking, Hatten set out to explore the potential of Bali as a wine-producing region.

Over the past 32 years, that pioneering spirit has driven the development of Bali’s vineyards, the exploration of heritage Balinese grape varieties and the adoption of new viticultural practices and winemaking techniques suited to tropical conditions.

Today, Avara represents the latest expression of this accumulated knowledge, bringing a new perspective to what Bali’s terroir can offer.

“When we started Hatten Wines in 1994, we wanted to prove that Bali could make its own wine. Thirty-two years later, our ambition has grown beyond Bali. We want to show the world that Indonesia can produce wines with their own identity, character and sense of place.”

— Ida Bagus Rai Budarsa, Founder & President Director, PT Hatten Bali Tbk

Inspired by the mountainous peaks, volcanic ridges and ocean breezes of North Bali, Avara is the result of extensive research and development across Hatten’s vineyards.

The journey involved evaluating 34 grape varieties to identify those best suited to Bali’s tropical growing conditions, with two new varieties and two heritage varieties ultimately selected to become part of the Avara collection.

Avara’s premium quality begins in the vineyard, with Hatten reserving its finest eight hectares at Sanggalangit for premium wine production. Unlike the traditional three harvests a year, this vineyard follows a single annual harvest, allowing for more selective fruit selection and focused production.

Each expression undergoes carefully tailored winemaking processes, involving techniques such as hand harvesting, selective pressing, barrel fermentation and extended ageing. From Prestige Cuvée’s minimum two years on lees with manual riddling and disgorgement, to Syrah’s 18 months of maturation and further bottle ageing, and the ten-year ageing of Grand Solera and XO, every wine reflects a commitment to craftsmanship and time. Produced in limited quantities, Avara represents Hatten’s highest expression of tropical winemaking expertise.

Rather than replicating established wine regions, Avara embraces the distinctive conditions of Bali, allowing its tropical climate, vineyard environment and carefully selected grape varieties to shape each wine.

The collection reflects Hatten Wines’ continued commitment to discovering new possibilities in tropical winemaking.

“Avara builds on everything we have learned from working with Bali’s vineyards over the years. It gave us the opportunity to explore certain varieties, vineyard sites and winemaking techniques in greater depth, while still staying true to the character of this tropical environment. For me, Avara is about taking that knowledge further and expressing another side of what Bali can produce.”

— James Kalleske, Head Winemaker, Hatten Winery

The collection makes its debut with international recognition across wine and spirits competitions. At the China Wine & Spirits Awards (CWSA) 2025, all five Avara expressions received medals, including Double Gold for Avara Grand Solera; Gold for Avara Chenin Blanc 2023 and Avara Syrah 2023; and Silver for Avara Prestige Cuvée and Avara XO.

Further recognition followed at AWC Vienna 2025, where Avara Grand Solera earned a Gold Medal and awarded Trophy for best fortified wine of the show, while Avara Chenin Blanc 2023 and Avara Prestige Cuvée received Seals of Approval. In 2026, Avara XO continued this international recognition with a Silver Medal at the Asia World Spirits Competition 2026.

The launch of Avara marks another milestone in Hatten Wines’ 32-year journey, building on its pioneering role in Indonesian winemaking and its continued exploration of Bali’s unique growing conditions. From heritage Balinese grapes to international varieties, Hatten’s experience has shaped an evolving portfolio that reflects the possibilities of high quality wines grown and made in Bali.

With Avara, Hatten Wines takes this exploration further, introducing a premium collection that showcases a distinct expression of Bali’s terroir while contributing to the growing international conversation around Indonesian wine.

From the vineyards of North Bali to wine enthusiasts in Indonesia and beyond, Avara represents the next chapter in Hatten Wines’ ongoing pursuit of innovation, discovery and tropical winemaking.

Avara is now available at The Cellardoor Bali, The Cellardoor Jakarta and selected outlets across Indonesia. (Z/002)
