Janmasthmi - Birth of an Shri Krishna

Janmashtmi is the birth of Shri Krishna, the birth of an avatar. Avatars are born for change, a change from negative to positive, because the inherent nature of creation is destruction and it happens as a spiral downwards. The avatar acts as a valve or a speed breaker. The Varaha avatar annihilated Hiranyaksh, Narsingh avatar came to end Hiranyakashipu, Vaman avatar protected creation from asur Bali, Parshurama saved humanity from Kartavirya Arjun, Ram destroyed Ravan and Krishna steered the great war of dharma, Mahabharat. Krishna avatar was in Dwapar yug, we are now in Kaliyug, and therefore another birth of Krishna in this yug is imperative.

 

The forces responsible for destruction, an avatar happens to remove them from the scene so that the destruction is delayed. The movement Destruction has to happen, the avatar delays it. Similarly in all of us, there is Krishna. When we do things for creation, which an avatar does, then we automatically come on the positive side of creation. These could be acts to protect the weak, or to save animals from dying or to feed the poor, or to conserve resources of nature. This way we become the channel for a minor change. To affect a major change, avatar is born.

 

Shri Krishna tells Arjun in Gita, yada yada hi dharamsya glanirbhavati bharatah, abhyuthanam adharmasya, tadatmaanam srijamyaham. (Whenever the positive is on a decline, and negative peaks, I am born)

 

Nothing is constant in creation, it is either moving up or moving down. A move up is a change from negative to positive, and a move down is a move from positive to negative…like what is happening today. If we look around today, the devolution of mankind is apparent. The pollution peaks in the human mind (in the form of greed, anger, jealousy etc) and as a reflection of it in our surroundings – rivers are drying, land and air are full of toxins, animals are suffering as are humans. The time is about set, for a change…the birth of an avatar is due.

 

In a small way we are all avatars, who are living on the positive side of creation and trying to protect it as this is what an avatar does in a macro way. If we go the opposite way, paving way for destruction of creation, by killing animals and exploiting resources etc, behaving like asurs, then the avatar is required for our annihilation. The choice lies with the human this Janmashtmi, whether to be born as an avatar or an asur.
